BlackBerry Classic Teardown and Assembly for Keyboard Replacement or Other Repairs

Follow
John Bilkey

In this video I show how I disassembled and reassembled my BlackBerry Classic to do a keyboard swap. Hopefully this video is helpful and keeps more BlackBerry Classics in the wild. I'm an 18 year old Electrical Engineering student at MSOE, on the younger end for BlackBerry users. This was the first phone I ever disassembled. I broke some ribbon cables on my forparts phones when I was figuring out how to safely open my main device but I learned how to do it properly and am confident you can do this as well. I tried my best to show where the ribbon cables and hidden screws were. I suggest watching this whole video before attempting a repair, then watching the video a second time and following along.

Corrections:
I say you need a Phillips 0000 screwdriver, you need a J000.
I also said to watch out for the USB port ribbon cable when removing the back cover of the Classic, I meant the battery ribbon cable. Narration was recorded at 12am.

I use the iFixIt Mako Precison 64bit Set in the video and to repair all sorts of devices, I recommend this kit to anyone who fixes phones and other things often or likes to tinker. If you are only fixing your BlackBerry, a T5 torx and JIS J000 screwdriver are the only tools you really need.
