Blasting 200000 Yards of Rock | Building Infrastructure For a Commercial Building | Petillo

Aaron and the boys met up with Petillo Companies to check out a 300,000 yard heavy equipment/blasting project (P.S. 200,000 of it was rock!)

The project is a building pad and the surrounding infrastructure for an undisclosed commercial building going in.

Like a lot of commercial sites… Petillo was crushing on site, and the product they needed wasn’t too complicated.

They had a jaw crusher with a screen deck to create two different products. One of the products was a more coarse rock for the base material for the actual building and the roads. Then, a finer material used for the backfill for the retaining walls.

They had 3 drills onsite drilling holes so they could blast the rock. Two different factors that affect how the rock fractures is the pattern, or hole spacing (how far the holes were from one another) and the size of the hole (the diameter of the hole).

To note: A good blast is timed out. You don’t just set them all off at once. There is a very, very small delay so that the holes will go off in rows, allowing the energy to move through properly to help fracture the rock more effectively.
