The Sterkfontein Dam, located just outside the town of Harrismith, in the Free State, province of South Africa, is part of the TugelaVaal Water Project and the Drakensberg Pumped Storage Scheme, and located on the Nuwejaarspruit. It is the second highest dam wall in South Africa and its highest earth fill dam. It is one of the cleanest dam with deep blue waters.
The Sterkfontein Dam is the centre of attraction for most visitors to this nature reserve. Every February the reserve holds the Catamaran Championships on the 7,000 ha dam. Strong winds make this a favourite dam for many types of watersports.Birds and bird lovers will also enjoy the dam. Nearly 200 bird species have been recorded at the reserve. There are several good trails where hikers can enjoy the fresh mountain air. The nature reserve encompasses both open veld terrain as well as many forested ravines and kloofs.
