The Blue Lakes Trail is located in the Mount Sneffels Wilderness, in the Uncompaghgre National Forest. The Blue Lakes Trail in Colorado is a hike that is located about 45 minutes from the Town of Telluride, Colorado. The closest towns to the Blue Lakes Trail are Ridgway and Ouray. Hiking the Blue Lakes Trail in Colorado takes you to three different lakes (Lower Blue Lake, Middle Blue Lake, and Upper Blue Lake). The starting elevation of the Blue Lakes Trailhead is 9,500 feet and the distance to the Lower Blue Lake is 3.50 miles. It has an elevation gain of about 1,600 feet. The Blue Lakes Trail is one of the best hikes in Colorado.

The Blue Lake Trail is considered to be a challenging hike and is dog friendly. It takes about 5 to 7 hours to complete (roundtrip) and is great for hiking, backpacking, and camping. The 1st lake on the Blue Lakes Trail is called Lower Blue Lake. It has perfect clear turquoise water that is surrounded by beautiful mountain peaks. I recommend that you walk around the Lower Blue Lake area and see it from different views. You can also camp at the Lower Blue Lake. Campers told us they really love the views in the morning of the sun rising and the moon at night over the Lower Blue Lake.

The distance from the Lower Blue Lake to the Middle Blue Lake is 0.70 miles and has an elevation gain of 650 feet. As you hike on the Blue Lakes Trail to the Middle Blue Lake you will see some beautiful views of the Lower Blue Lake. The hike to the Middle Blue Lake is steeper grade compared to the first part of the hike. The Middle Blue Lake is the smallest of the three lakes.

The hike from the Middle Blue Lake to the Upper Blue Lake is about 0.30 miles and has an elevation gain of 150 feet. The Blue Lakes Trail from Middle Blue Lake to Upper Blue Lake is easy.
