Blüthner Model 6

Kim's Piano is one of the few showrooms in the country where you can find a full selection of Blüthner grands and uprights to play

Origin : Julius Blüthner Pianofortefabrik in Leipzig, Germany

Orientation: Blüthner makes a full range of grand piano sizes, the Model 2 is their semiconcert grand at 238 cm / 7’8”

Maker: Blüthner is one of the world’s most renowned pianomakers

Fit & Finish: a beautiful piano with exquisite craftsmanship. They use a bird’s eye maple on the inner rim and their signature Blüthner blue felt.

Hammers: Abel hammers from Germany, which are cold pressed and a softer hammer than the Renner blues commonly chosen by German high end makers.

Action: Renner action built in Germany Renner is used by nearly all top European brands. Blüthner’s proprietary geometry and hammer choice give their action a lighter feel.

Touch, responsiveness, control: The touch is lighter and highly responsive. It rewards a higher level of control with even more colors and nuances making it a joy to get to know and to grow with over time.

Soundboard: solid White European spruce. Slowgrowth spruce trees from the Alps are 150250 years old, providing the optimal density and flexibility for exceptionally resonant soundboards. Blüthner crafts their soundboard in a unique cylindrical crown that adds to their clarity and focus and overall stability up and down the entire scale.

4th String aliquot: The Blüthner sound can rarely be discussed without noting Julius Blüthner’s 4th string Aliquot. Where piano generally have 3 strings per note in the treble, Blüthner adds a 4th string and raises it so it is not struck directly by the hammer. It resonates from the energy of the neighboring strings, adding color and fullness to the last two octaves, giving those top notes a true belllike quality.

Tone: The Blüthner has the clarity and purity you would expect from a top tier German maker, favoring a crystalline brilliance and warmth. The Blüthner is expressive, delicate as well as powerful. The Model 2 sings at every dynamic level. The bass is very transparent, which allows the player to play more notes more densely together while remaining distinct and recognizable. Its a characteristic that tends to diminish when the bass is more rumbly, but the bass is not lacking in power. Blüthners are designed to sing and ring out rather than roar. It also allows for easier phrasing, increasing the player’s ability to emphasize melody lines or accents wherever they may fall on the scale.

Music that shines: Any of the top tier pianomakers at this level can express the full 3 centuries of piano music with great credibility and beauty. Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Shastakovich and Mahler were known to have composed many of their works on Blüthner pianos, while Debussy chose his Blüthner piano when he fell in love with the sound of a newly innovated 4th string aliquot model and composed his entire repertoire on the Blüthner, to give a few hallmarks.
