As you can see from the QRH, a 180 degree turn is recommended and descending if need be. The thing about making a 180 degree turn is that you can be certain that you are turning away from the ash cloud, because you’ve just come from that direction where you were not in the ash. The descending recommendation allows for the engines to have a better stall margin to make it easier to restart if you do have engine lack of response due to the effects of the ash.
