During WWII Bombers modified their tactics and equipment to mitigate the effects of German FLAK on the bomber loss rates. As the bomber formations approached the target they are likely to come under fire from ground artillery FLAK batteries. In order to reduce losses and damage the formations would conduct various maneuvers to place the bombers outside of the flak projectiles lethal range at detonation. The bombers could change speed, altitude or course. The guidance the bombers were given was in conflict to the effectiveness the evasive action had on the Germany’s air defense systems response.
