Monsanto, one of the worlds most unique villages, built in and amongst the giant boulders upon a hill top in Portugal.

Abandoned houses, boulder shops and chapels, wind all the way up to the castle at the summit.

The earliest trace of humans here was in the early stone age. In the 12th century the king conquered Monsanto and granted custody to the knights templar.
After the wars, the village was reconstructed and repopulated. The medieval castle was destroyed in the 19th century due to an explosion in the ammunition depot.

It was voted ‘The Most Portuguese Village’ in 1938 and it was awarded the silver rooster, which sits above the clock tower. The village has remained almost unchanged in the 84 years since…
