প্রথম বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সময় কলকাতার ব্রিটিশ সেনাবাহিনীর বসবাসের জন্য তৈরি হয়েছিল শতাব্দীপ্রাচীন এই বাড়ি বা ব্যারাক। তারা চলে যাওয়ার পর তাদের বংশধরেরা যুগের পর যুগ ধরে বসবাস করছেন। সেকারণে তারা অ্যাংলোইন্ডিয়ান বা ইঙ্গভারতীয় সম্প্রদায় হিসেবে পরিচিত।
