TEDx Talks

The violence experienced by young African American males in the inner cities of America has
negatively impacted their mental health. Black youth/young adults have been repeatedly
exposed to violent events within the community to the point that it seems like a “normal” thing for them. Are our black youth and young adults aware of the impact community violence has on
their mental health, decisions, success, and other elements of their lives? How can you break
the cycle of community violence? Listen to Casey Boston talk about his experiences with community violence, the negative effects of community violence, protective factors, and important steps toward healing. Casey Boston was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y,, and is a devout Bible believer. Boston was a student athlete who earned a bachelor’s degree in clinical counseling psychology with a minor in sports management from Alfred University. Boston was the vice president of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee for one year, and the quarterback at Alfred University for four years. He is now pursuing his Master of Social Work at Binghamton University. He hopes to work as a social worker providing mental health therapy to adolescents and adults after graduation. Boston enjoys lifting weights, reading the Bible, playing recreational basketball and football, and reading educational literature in his spare time. He comes from a Godfearing family that loves and supports him in all his endeavors. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
