meenakshi bhavan, shimoga, shivamogga, 100 year old restaurant in shimoga, sri meenakshi bhavan shimoga, breakfast, south canara meal, dakshina kannada food, must visit, benne masala dosa, idli vada, paddu, avalakki mosaru, coffee, family business, shimoga food trail, karnataka food tour, gourmet on the road, kripal amanna, food lovers tv, food lovers india, truth in food

When I survey a new city for a Gourmet On The Road series, I usually invite recommendations from viewers, and post due diligence and research, these form the basis for what one eventually explores. When I called out for Shimoga, this restaurant received the most recommendations. And those in the know may not be surprised given the fact that Sri Meenakshi Bhavan has been an integral part, actually a pioneer of the city’s culinary landscape for over a century now. The space that it occupies was once the owning family’s ancestral abode and that energy also seems to permeate through the homely oldfashioned decor and the South Canara inspired fare here. The food is tasty, sumptuous and satisfying, made to traditional recipes by cooks, many who have served in the kitchens here for decades. Whilst the benne masala dosae may come as the most recommended dish, the vade, avalakki mosaru, paddu too are as rewarding as I found during a breakfast visit where I also had the opportunity to converse with the restaurant’s third generation owner, Mr Chandrashekar and his daughter, Ganavi.

If you are in Shimoga, or are making plans to visit, this is one eatery you must not miss. Hope you enjoy this breakfast episode. Take care, stay safe and strong. Happy eating!
