Breakthrough research brings life-saving treatments to more patients

In the past, a fully matched donor was crucial for the success of a blood stem cell transplant. Now, breakthrough research led by NMDP suggests that a fully matched donor may no longer be needed, thanks to a novel posttransplant treatment regimen.

The results of this research expand the definition of a suitable donor to include those who are not a full match—that is, those with less than 8 of 8 matching human leukocytic antigen (HLA) markers.

By expanding access to suitable donor options, a donor could now be offered to almost every single patient (99%) for the transplant or cell therapy they need.

This research opens doors for so many patients in need of a lifesaving transplant who faced incredible difficulties in the past in finding a fully matched donor outside of their family—such as those with diverse ancestries.

The 15MMUD clinical trial and followup studies are part of NMDP’s transformational Donor for All research initiative, which aims to deliver equitable outcomes for patients without a fully matched donor.

The trials are funded by NMDP through CIBMTR® (Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research®), a research collaboration between the Medical College of Wisconsin® and NMDP.
