Most of us are familiar with the traditional but abbreviated
“Breastplate of St. Patrick Prayer".

The Breastplate of Saint Patrick's is a lorica, attributed to Patrick about 433 CE but linguistically believed to be written around 700 CE.
In the Christian monastic tradition a lorica is a prayer specifically
for protection against evil by invoking the power of God.
A Lorica is a breastplate (in Latin) a type of armor covering the chest
front and back and worn by soldiers in battle.
Soldiers would inscribe prayers onto their armor or shields
and then recite them before battle.

The origins are an old Irish prayer of protection or “spell of concealment”.
The influence of the ancient Druids is heard, invoking the “féth fíada”.
A ”féth fíada” is a magical mist to enshroud (in some traditions it is a cloak of invisibility) & rendering one invisible to human sight.

This is why I chose to use the older "I bind unto myself today"
rather than the more familiar translation of “I arise today”
to invoke that prayer of protection.
