On a very rare occasion the Dampfbahn FurkaBergstrecke (DFB) steam train with the coalfired steam locomotive HG 3/4 "FO 4" from 1913 crossed on October 28th 2023 the Swiss Oberalp Pass (2033 m above sea level) as part of nostalgia trips "Full Steam ahead at the Oberalp Pass" or "Volldampf am Oberalppass" as called in German. The Oberalp Pass is also part of the route traveled by the Swiss Glacier Express. It is a narrow gauge rail with cogwheel streches.
The historic DFB steam train started in the village of Realp, stopped in Hospental for a water refill and continued its ride along the Urseren Valley to the mountain resort of Andermatt. From Andermatt at 1436 m above sea level, the steam locomotive FO 4 had to use cogwheel traction to master the ascend to the Oberalp Pass.

For most people, this steam train ride over the Oberalp Pass was a first. Trains operated by steam locomotives used the route, which was put into service in 1926, until the electrification of the FurkaOberalp Railway (FO) in 1942. Travel was period correct in three classes:. In the 1st class (Premium Class) and in the 2nd class (1st class) the journey was a bit more comfortable in fauteuils. The 3rd class, in contrast, offered wooden benches.
