In this video I will show you how I converted 1butanol into 1bromobutane.
First, I measured 240 grams of potassium bromide and dissolved it in 400 ml of distilled water. To the solution I added 200 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid dropwise. The addition was done slowly with cooling to prevent the sulfuric acid from oxidizing the bromide. Then the solution was filtered into 1000 ml 3 necked round bottom flask. To this I added 88 grams of 1butanol followed by 110 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid.
The mixture was heated under reflux for 3 hours, during which an oily layer of bromobutane separated. The flask was rearranged for simple distillation and distilled until no more oily liquid came over. The distilled liquid separated into 2 layers. The lower layer was bromobutane and was separated via separatory funnel. It was then washed successively with water, concentrated HCl, again with water, saturated solution of sodium bicarbonate and saturated solution of sodium chloride. The organic layer was then dried with some anhydrous sodium sulphate.
After filtering the salt, the product was distilled yielding 136 g, 83,4% bromobutane.
