The BLDC motor has a permanent magnet rotor and an electronic commutation takes place in the rotor. In order for this commutation to take place, the rotor position must be determined. BLDC motor is a kind of synchronous motor. In a DC machine, the process of changing the direction of the current in a coil in an armature is called commutation.
Normal DC motors have a wide range of uses in terms of features and usability. However, due to its dependence on brush and commutator, it has narrowed its usage areas in some environments. Brushes require maintenance over time as they wear out. In this case, when a motor that needs maintenance is used in environments where a constant number of rotations is required, such as a floppy disk or CD drive, there will be a change in the number of rotations over time. Brushless DC motors occur when the brush and commutator are replaced by a semiconductor switch. Strong natural magnets are used in the rotor part of these motors. In the stator, there are coiled windings.
The rotating part of the motor, namely the rotor, is inside the motor. The body (stator) is fixed. These motors generally have higher speeds than the other type, the outrunner. On the other hand, the torque produced by the motors per volt is less. Having the rotor inside provides a lot of usability. They are similar in appearance to standard brushed motors.
Outrunner Brushless Motor
Outrunner motors have a mechanical arrangement in contrast to inrunner motors. The rotor of the motor is on the outside. In other words, the body of the motor is inside the rotating fixed part. They are more difficult to cool because the coil part is in the center. Outrunner motors are used more frequently in flying projects (helicopter, quadrotor, airplane...) due to their lower torque and higher torque.
