Maryland Gov. Wes Moore responded to a report from The New York Times on Thursday regarding his military record and the Bronze Star Medal he never received.

Moore made the claim that he received the medal on an application for a White House fellowship in 2006, according to a copy of the document obtained by The New York Times.

Moore said he took advice from his deputy brigade commander to include the award on his application for the fellowship because he received confirmation that the award was signed and approved by senior leadership.

However, Moore said he learned that at the end of his deployment, he did not receive the award. He said it was an “honest mistake” to have not corrected the note on his application.
