In this episode Nikhil talks about the history of Lumbini, located in presentday Nepal, is revered as the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became known as Buddha. This sacred site holds immense significance in Buddhism and attracts pilgrims and tourists from around the world.
According to historical accounts, Queen Maya Devi, the mother of Siddhartha Gautama, gave birth to him in Lumbini around 563 BCE. Emperor Ashoka of the Maurya Dynasty played a crucial role in spreading Buddhism, and he visited Lumbini in the 3rd century BCE. He erected a commemorative pillar with inscriptions to honor the sacred birthplace. Over time, various stupas, monasteries, and other structures were built in Lumbini, making it a center for Buddhist pilgrimage.
In the late 20th century, UNESCO designated Lumbini as a World Heritage Site, ensuring its preservation and recognition as a place of immense cultural and historical importance. Today, Lumbini stands as a symbol of peace and enlightenment, attracting visitors seeking spiritual and historical enrichment.
