Building a Neolithic Sled | Prehistoric Technology

Have you ever wondered how the giant stones at Stonehenge were moved into position? We’ve been experimenting with some of the most popular theories which try and explain how the Neolithic builders of Stonehenge achieved this incredible feat.

In 2018 we attempted to move a 4tonne stone, similar in size and shape to one of the horizontal lintels found in the iconic stone circle, by pulling it on rollers. We learned that it is difficult to control the speed and direction of the stone using this method.

In this video our volunteers build a wooden sledge which, in 2019, visitors at Stonehenge will pull across an assault course of terrains and obstacles, to investigate whether this system provided our ancestors with a better system for moving stones of up to 45 tonnes over huge distances.
