When discussing the spine of, the most common topic that arises is the spinal discs. This is especially true for patients suffering from any spinal problems.

Spinal discs are structures between each vertebra, acting as a spacer and shock absorbers between spinal bones. These have a gellike texture in the center that allow fluidity of movement in the spine, allowing for a frictionfree environment as bone mass can degenerate over time. The spinal discs also facilitate movement along the spine, and if deteriorated, these will limit the patient's flexibility and movement as these make up the spine's structure and its natural curves.

As spinal discs bulge or deteriorate, the annulus (gellike center) moves out of position, causing it to bulge to one side. When this happens, it leads to compression of the space between these vertebras, which can lead to neurological problems and symptoms. This bulging can happen in the cervical, thoracic or lumbar areas of the spine. The most common bulging occurs in the cervical (neck) and lumbar (low back) areas.

Main causes of bulging discs:
Disc desiccation (loss of disc fluid levels)
Disc degeneration (aging, traumatic injuries, long periods of sitting)
Spinal injuries/trauma (car accidents, falls, sports injuries)

Most common symptoms of disc pain:
Pain
Muscle Spams
Weakness
Numbness
Muscle atrophy
Coordination and gait issues
Limited range of motion
Sciatica
Bladder and bowels issues

Understanding the cause of the bulging disc is the first step toward treatment, and it is often due to a misalignment in a specific area of the spine. It is unlikely to find a bulging disc when there is no spinal misalignment.

Patients are often treated symptomatically, just for pain, and when this is done, the disc bulging does not heal. Therefore symptoms will continue and worsen over time. In these cases, a structural approach that combines chiropractic care, exercises, physical therapy, traction, and rehabilitation will have the biggest effect and help realign the vertebrae, which is the cause of the bulging disc. These will help the body heal and regain lost functionality.

In addition to the realignment of the vertebrae, it must also be stabilized to prevent the problem from returning.

If you suspect you have a bulging disc, our recommendations are:
1. Evaluate your spine and look for any abnormal alignment
2. Treat the disc properly so it can begin to heal
3. Practice good ergonomics to prevent disc bulging in the future
4. Avoid a sedentary lifestyle
5. Be proactive in preserving your spinal function and proper position
