What you need to know about Pashmina!
Pashmina is the regal art of handcrafting luxury apparel & wraps from a rare wool type. The wool is acquired from an exotic goat of the Ladakh region and is called Cashmere. The name comes from the word ‘Pashm’, which translates to ‘soft gold’ in the Persian language & can refer either to the material or the variant of Kashmiri shawl that is made from it. Pashmina has been a certified as a GI product of Kashmir since 2008 for the unique process of old age manufacturing by the local artisans of Kashmir valley. A craze for pashmina shawls, known as shahmina in Kashmir, in the mid1990s resulted in high demand for the raw material, so demand exceeded supply. When these shawls rose into fashion prominence during the era, they were marketed dubiously. In the consumer markets, pashmina shawls have been redefined as a shawl/wrap with cashmere and cashmere/silk, notwithstanding the actual meaning of pashmina. Some shawls marketed as pashmina shawls contain (sheep) wool, while other unscrupulous companies marketed artificial fabrics such as viscose and others as "pashmina" with deceptive marketing statements such as "authentic viscose pashmina".
