Love the Alaska Life? Well then you'll love this Byron Glacier Hike!
In Portage, Alaska the beautiful Byron Glacier makes the dream of standing on an Alaskan glacier a reality. The Byron Glacier trailhead is just past the Begich Boggs Visitor Center near Portage Lake. This easy hike meanders along Byron Creek until you reach the breathtaking sight of Byron Glacier. Ice Caves come and go at Byron Glacier depending on weather and season. Because the glacier is alive, it’s constantly moving and an ice cave that may be there today, could be gone tomorrow. For this reason, it’s important to be cautious as you soak in this natural beauty as at any moment the glacier could calf. Even on a warm day, a wind breaker is recommended as winds can pick up in the valley where Byron Glacier resides. The entire area of Portage is a beautiful place; because of this fact, your easy day hike to Byron could easily turn into an all day adventure!
