Welcome, my artist name is Pablo Boness and if you’re looking for an easy way to learn playing the cajon, then you definitely landed on the right place.
On regular times, I’m posting more then a hundred videos on my YouTube channel and in each video I present another rhythm pattern that is specifically designed for the cajon. The separate notation of all rhythm patterns will be bundled in a series of tutorial books, which will make it easy to visualize the rhythm while learning/playing and to refer to any of the patterns at all time.
In the first volume ( Vol. 1) I cover the most popular music styles like rock, pop, latin, reggae, jazz, folk, etc … . In the second volume (Vol. 2) I include a bunch of freestyle patterns which you can use to practice or which you can use in whatever music you want.
For all the patterns in this method we use only three basic hits: “BA” (bass), “TA” (a high pitch slap) and “ti” (very light stroke) and, certainly in the beginning, all patterns are played by simply walking with your hands over the cajon, steadily right, left, right, left, right, left …
This is a perfect method if you just start playing the cajon, but I’m pretty sure that even advanced players who want to polish their playing skills will also benefit from these videos.

Here are some very important tips to pay attention to:
Except for some specific rhythms used in styles like jazz or reggae, … , your hands just move in an equal pace right, left, right, left, right, left, … . By no means skip any of the “ti”, every single beat matters !
Start each pattern very very very slowly. It’s always good to use a metronome, keep a tempo until you’re comfortable with it and then, only then speed it up a little more. Again, keep that tempo until it runs smoothly and you’re comfortable with it, speed it up a little more, again stay with this tempo until it’s in your hands, and only then, again, speed up a little bit … !
Be aware of your dynamics: keep the volume of “ti” as low as possible, especially when speeding up, only then you’ll get to hear and to feel the groove of the rhythm.
Make it easy for yourself and at first, even before playing, say or chant the rhythm out loud. Afterwards you can even do this also while playing.
All patterns start with the right hand, but if you’re left handed, you can as well reverse this and start with the left hand. It might be a challenge for advanced right hand players to try this as well.
