Unlock the secrets of remote sensing with our comprehensive tutorial on calculating lake area using Landsat 8 imagery! In this video, we guide you through each step of the process, from defining your region of interest (ROI) to calculating the total water area.

We'll start by defining the ROI using specific coordinates, which are then added to the map for visualization. With our ROI set, we proceed to specify the time period for analysis, focusing on images from 2016 to 2022. Next, we filter and process the Landsat 8 imagery. We ensure our images have less than 10% cloud cover and are taken between June and September.

We'll also demonstrate how to apply a scaling factor to convert image band values to surface reflectance and compute the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) to highlight water bodies.

Once the NDWI is calculated, we add it to the map along with a threshold NDWI layer to identify significant water presence. We create a binary mask for NDWI values greater than 0.1 and apply it to highlight areas with notable water presence. Then, we calculate the area of each pixel in square kilometers for the masked NDWI layer and add this layer to the map. Finally, we sum the pixel areas within the ROI to calculate the total water area, which is then displayed in the console.
