City of Calgary officials announced not only the easing of outdoor water restrictions during a press conference on Saturday, but the lifting of an ongoing fire ban.

The ban and stage 4 outdoor water restrictions were brought forth weeks ago after a catastrophic water main break triggered a water supply alert throughout the city. Now, the city and surrounding area sits at stage 3.

What does stage 3 mean? According to Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek, it means outdoor taps can be used, to an extent, and "allowances have been made to have outdoor pools and spray parks up and running as soon as possible."

Calgarians were told earlier this week they could “ease” into normal indoor water consumption. Until Saturday, however, the stage 4 water restrictions remained in place for outside usage — despite rising temperatures.

Additionally, Calgary Emergency Management Agency Chief Sue Henry – who has been providing updates on an almostdaily basis since the initial water break – revealed the deactivation of the Municipal Emergency Plan and the standing down of the Emergency Operations Center.

“Our water teams will remain working 24/7 to make sure we have safe, quality drinking water and that we continue on the path to recovery and restoration of service,” Henry said, ensuring Calgarians that major updates will continue to come.
