Can a High-rise survive 2 G forces? (Earthquake Intensity VII IX X XII)

Follow
EarthquakeSim

Watch this 16story highrise building being tested for 4 ground shaking intensities: VII, IX, X and XII (x2). These are associated with Mercalli scale and NOT Richter scale.

Video chapters:
0:00 Intensity VII, ~about 6 Richter, location near epicenter
0:29 Intensity IX, ~about 7 Richter, location near epicenter
1:28 Intensity X, ~over 7.5 Richter, location near epicenter
2:29 Intensity XII, ~over 7.8 Richter, location near epicenter
7:42 Intensity XII, 2nd test.

In the real world, larger ground shaking intensities have been observed with smaller magnitude earthquakes then written above. One example is the Great Hanshin earthquake that hit the city of Kobe. Registering only 6.9 Mw, it caused severe ground shaking intensities of XII near the fault rupture area.

I hope these simulations will bring more earthquake awareness around the world and educate the general public about potential earthquake related hazards. SHARE this video on social media to spread more awareness about earthquake damage!

This earthquake collapse simulation was created in Blender 3D with the Bullet Constraints Builder (BCB a structural simulation code made by Kai Kostack) which extends Blender´s basic physics functionality with a sophisticated toolset to simulate load dynamics in building structures.
