Chickenpox is a very contagious infection caused by the varicella zoster virus. Chickenpox can affect anyone at any age.
Most people with chickenpox have mild symptoms and get better quickly. In rare cases, the virus can cause serious complications such as:

pneumonia
meningitis
Congenital malformations in case of pregnancy

Symptoms and Causes
Lowgrade fever.
Feeling tired.
Headache.
A stomachache that makes you not want to eat.
A skin rash that's very itchy and looks like many small blisters.
Bumps filled with a liquid that looks like milky water.
Scabs after the blisters break.
Skin that looks blotchy.

The best way to prevent chickenpox is to get the chickenpox vaccine. Everyone—including children, adolescents, and adults—should get two doses of chickenpox vaccine if they have never had chickenpox or were never vaccinated.


There is no treatment for chickenpox. But, you can get remedies from your pharmacy that can help symptoms. These include:

paracetamol to help bring down a fever
calamine lotion and cooling gels to ease itching.
In most children, the blisters crust up and fall off naturally within 1 to 2 weeks.

Adults with chickenpox may be helped by taking antiviral medicine if its diagnosed early enough.

Stopping the spread of chickenpox
You should keep children off school or nursery until all their spots have crusted over. This will help stop chickenpox being spread.

Adults with chickenpox should stay off work until all the spots have crusted over.

Chickenpox is infectious from 1 to 2 days before the rash starts. It stops being infectious when all the blisters have crusted over
