Complex PTSD is a term used to describe a series of traumatic events that have been pervasive or chronic. The "complex" part of PTSD is that the traumatic experience is chronic where the individual perceives or believes they have no way of escape.

A series of traumatic incidents within a family is referred to as intergenerational trauma. But a series of traumatic events in your life alone could be defined as complex PTSD.

Another "variant" of complex PTSD is known as chronic and acute traumatic stress which is the "milder" form of symptoms that are not meeting criteria to be listed as PTSD.
