When the spine bends unnaturally with a twist, this is considered scoliosis if the Cobb angle measurement is 10 degrees or greater. Scoliosis is a progressive condition and has different severity levels called mild, moderate, severe, and very severe. Every scoliosis case is unique and affects the individual's body differently; the severity of the scoliosis does not equal the impact on the body. The more severe the angle, the more likely it is to cause problems.

How much progression occurs in adolescence has less impact as the body is growing around the curve than developing or progressing in the adult stage when it is happening as a result of compression over time. The curve that develops as an adult is more likely to cause issues than the curve that progressed as a child.

This can lead to neuropathy which is damage or impairment that's experienced by one or more nerves. Neuropathy can lead to a host of different issues because the nervous system is responsible for controlling the majority of functions of the body. Neuropathy can lead to sensations such as tingling, numbness, and muscle weakness in the affected areas. There are different types of neuropathy, and it can affect all the nerves in the body. Mild neuropathy is when damage occurs to a single nerve; polyneuropathy is when multiple nerves are affected.

A common sign of sensory neuropathy is pain, or loss of sensation, tingling, the inability to feel pain, and changes in coordination. Symptoms of motor neuropathy can be muscle weakness, loss of motor control, muscle twitching or tics, spams, reduced range of motion, balance, and coordination. Symptoms of autonomic neuropathy can be dizziness, fainting spells, nausea, vomiting, digestive issues, changes in blood pressure, abnormal heart rate, and sexual dysfunction. Anything that happens autonomically.

The spine and brain work in tandem through the central nervous system, which extends from your brain down your spinal cord. Anything that shifts the spine can affect the nervous system.

If there is an unnatural scoliosis curvature compressing the spine and the nerves itself, it can lead to neuropathy. Motor neuropathy, sensory Neuropathy, or autonomic neuropathy. This is why we know that scoliosis is more than just a spinal condition; it affects the entire body on some level, and the functional deficits that occur as a result of this compression on the nervous system are unknown. As the curves become larger and more severe and cause more compression, they can have very severe effects on the health and wellbeing of the body.

The best way to deal with neuropathy possibly incurred from scoliosis is first to determine which nerves are being affected, then if they are in the area of your scoliosis. Such as, if you have leg neuropathy and you have lumbar scoliosis, there is a high correlation that scoliosis is affecting that neuropathy.

Then you need to determine if a customized treatment plan can be used to address and reduce the scoliosis and reduce its effect on the neuropathy.

At The Scoliosis Reduction Center, we recommend if you have neuropathy as well as scoliosis, to address the cause by reducing the curve in a conservative noninvasive functional approach to get your spine functioning as best as you can so the body can begin to recover.
