If you are going to do this yourself, make sure that you have enough leveling compound so that it does get stiff. Feel free to have someone to help you, always easier when you are two.
Use a smooth filler to get the best smoothness.
After a few hours you can cut and shape the mass (good if you want to adjust to wells etc.)
