Can You 🏃 RUN 🏃 After Total Knee Replacement?

Total Therapy Solution - Physical Therapy

In this video I discuss the possibility of returning to running after having a total knee replacement. The speaker notes that while the answer to this question would have been a definitive "no" 1520 years ago, the perspective has changed now. Based on interviews with multiple surgeons, the speaker suggests that the ability to return to running depends on several factors:

Training History: If someone has been running for 2030 years, with good conditioning and understanding of running biomechanics, they are more likely to be able to return to running after the prosthesis has completely healed.

Body Weight: Heavyweight runners have a higher risk of damaging the knee replacement components or wearing them out prematurely compared to lightweight runners.

Running Surface and Distance: The risk profile differs significantly between someone who runs short distances on soft, compliant surfaces like grass or trails, and someone who runs long distances on hard surfaces like pavement.

The speaker emphasizes that if running is a significant part of someone's identity and contributes to their health and happiness, it shouldn't be abandoned out of fear of damaging the knee replacement. They advise talking to a surgeon and a physical therapist to weigh the risks and benefits of returning to running. Ultimately, the decision to run again postsurgery is a personal one, with the individual assessing and accepting the associated risks.
