Cape Town to Robben Island | South Africa (Ep50)

Seas The Day

So our day one in South Africa was jam packed to say the least. We started our day with the hopes of going up Table Mountain, but our hopes were dashed as we drove closer to the cable car (keep an eye out for a future episode to see if we do make it...).

Instead, our day started in BoKaap, a place that was very high on every local instergrammers list. The streets lined with brightly coloured houses and were impeccably kept, it must have taken quite a lot to keep these houses looking nice but they were defiantly a tourist spot for any visitors. From here we went on to Botanical Gardens with Table Mountain proudly in the background. These gardens only hold plants indigenous to South Africa and the amount of Bird of Paradise plants was insane. They were everywhere, but being the national plant of South Africa, I suppose we shouldn't be surprised.

Next on our day one itinerary was a trip to Robben Island. For those that don't know, Robben Island was where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years until his release in 1990. This island was AMAZING! There was a little village on the island, no longer used except for museum workers living quarters and churches all over the island. Many people would be mistaken into thinking this place was only inhabited because of its prison, but this is not the case. The history of this tiny island dates back hundreds of years. There was a mental health hospital set up on the island as well as a quarantine for anyone with Leprosy when it was taking hold in Cape Town. We were shown around the prison by a former inmate who was imprisoned there for 7 years until it was decommissioned, shut down and all the prisoners released in 1991. He tells us his story of his time in the prison and the mark and influence it has left on his life.

We really hope you enjoy this episode, we loved filming it and documenting our time in Cape Town, especially the touching tale from the previous inmate at Robben Island.
