Have you ever been consumed by selfdoubt? Did it hold you back professionally?

Carl Allamby spent 20 years fixing cars before realizing his true calling: fixing people. At 47, he became an emergency physician at Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital.

Allamby had daydreamed of healing people as a child. But for most of his life, being a doctor felt out of reach. He rediscovered a passion for medicine in his 30s, but by then, said he felt “too old” to be a doctor. Instead, Allamby set his sights on becoming a nurse or a physician’s assistant. An unexpected ally later challenges Allamby’s own perception of himself — allowing him to realize his true potential.

“Nothing would have changed if I hadn’t stopped putting limits on myself,” Dr. Allamby says.
