In this video, PDSA Vet Nurse Shauna explains how to care for your dog after surgery:

Step 1 – Rest
Bring your dog home from the vets straight away, without stopping anywhere else, and let them rest in a warm, quiet room away from children, other animals, and noise.

Step 2 – Food
Unless your vet has recommended a special diet, feed them their normal food little and often for the first 2448 hours, then start feeding them normally again.

Step 3 – Toileting
Keep your dog on a lead when they go out to the toilet. Your dog should be weeing normally but it’s quite normal for them to not poo for a couple of days after surgery.

Step 4 – Medication
Make sure you give your dog all their prescribed medication on time – it can be helpful to use a medication chart to keep track and set alarms to remind you when they’re due the next dose.

Step 5 – Stitches
If your dog has stitches, purchase a protective cone (plastic, fabric or cardboard), an inflatable collar, or a protective body suit to stop them licking at their wound.

Step 6 – Exercise
Until your vet says it’s okay to exercise your dog, keep walks to an absolute minimum and always on a lead.

Step 7 – Checkup appointments
Go to all your dog’s checkup appointments even if they seem to be completely recovered.

Remember to contact your vet if you have any concerns about your dog following surgery. If any of the advice in this video differs from what your vet team has told you, follow their advice which is specific to your dog and the surgery they’ve had.
