Watch this 3D animation video to find out what happens during a carpal tunnel release surgery. Those with carpal tunnel syndrome suffer from numbness of the palm side of the thumb, index, middle and sometimes, half of the ring finger. They may also experience night pain causing one to wake from sleep, clumsiness or difficulty with buttons and weakness in the hand.

If the symptoms are mild, you may be given conservative treatment such as:

Lifestyle modifications to reduce repetitive activity
Oral medication
Night splinting
Hand exercises
Steroid injection
If the symptoms are more severe and persistent, you may be required to undergo the carpal tunnel release surgery which is typically a day surgery procedure done under local anaesthesia. It involves the cutting of the transverse carpal ligament to make more space within the carpal tunnel and relieve the pressure on the nerve which has been compressed.

Steps in the carpal tunnel release surgery:
1) Your wrist and hand are anaesthetised
2) An incision will be made at the base of your palm where the carpal tunnel in located
3) Surgeon cuts the transverse carpal ligament
4) Incision is closed and a compression bandage is applied. Your wrist and hand are then bandaged.
