Carving a Spoon with a Knife

Follow
Mr. Lower

Sitting around in silence with a knife and a piece of wood is one of the great pleasures in life for a woodworker like me.

Carving a spoon from a piece of poplar is simple and satisfying the even grain and softness of the poplar make it an ideal wood for carving. To soften the grain further, I soaked some blanks in water for ~48 hours. I wasn't sure it would work, but it turned out great! This softened the wood fibers enough to simulate carving 'green' wood (freshly cut from a living tree, which contains moisture).

The knives I am using are the Morakniv 162 doublesided hook knife, and the Morakniv 106 carving knife
