Caste system is a unique and controversial aspect of Indian society, which has been affecting various aspects of social, economic and political life for centuries. Recently, the Justice K. Chandru Committee, constituted in the backdrop of a murderous attack on two Scheduled Caste siblings by their classmates from their own community in Tamil Nadu, has attempted to improve this situation. The committee has recommended to the state government that students should be prohibited from wearing any kind of colored wrist bands, rings or forehead marks (tilak) that serve as caste identification. Casteism has currently become a major cause of social inequality. In this article, we will deeply analyze the various aspects of caste system, its historical evolution, social and economic impact, contemporary status and constitutional provisions related to it.
