One of the Most Powerful French Queens: How Catherine de' Medici Looked in Real Life. Let's recreate her many portraits from YOUNG to OLD. Catherine de' Medici (15191589) was from the famous Italian Medici banking family and became Queen of France. During her reign she saw 3 of her sons become King. Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III. However she was the power behind the crown and controlled her children. During this time as well, France was headed into civil war and she was blamed for instigating the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre. Whether that is true or not, we don't know for certain. But what we do know is that she was one of the most powerful women in Europe and reigned France for 17 years.
