Centre of Mass and Stability - Different Objects - GCSE Physics

This GCSE physics tutorial explains the three types of stability that objects can have, depending on their centre of mass and their base.

If an object has a low centre of mass and a wide base, then it will be stable. It's centre of mass will rise if the object is tilted slightly and so it will return to its stable position (centre of mass falls)

If an object has a high centre of mass and a narrow base, then its centre of mass will fall when it is tilted slightly. This means that the object is unstable and will topple easily (centre of mass falls).

An object in which the centre of mass neither rises, nor falls when it is tilted slightly has neutral stability it will neither topple nor return to its original position.
