Tank Encyclopedia

The Olifant Mk1A derives its name from the African Elephant, symbolizing its sheer strength and dominance. Introduced in 1983, it served as the primary Main Battle Tank of South Africa until the adoption of the Olifant Mk2 in 2006, and a pivotal component of the nation's military strategy leading up to the conclusion of the Cold War era. As the heaviest military vehicle in the former South African Defence Force (SADF), the Olifant Mk1A stood as a formidable battlefield asset during the South African Border War (19771989), adapted specifically for the challenges of South African terrain and climate.
