Let me State for the record that I’m the missing link here. I should have had these issues figured out before entering the Cabin Fever Challenge.

I definitely like the rifle. The Savage 64F has been a rifle I've been aware of from a distance. Always curious but I was raised on bolt guns and semiauto tech at the time wasn't great and frankly I find the Savage / Lakefield / Cooey 64 less in the charisma department. Yes I'm enjoying shooting it and although it hasn't exceeded my expectations I am learning more about what I need to do to fix it. So I can't call this a rifle review because I need more time with it. Today is about shooting!

The alternatives were the Winchester Wildcat, Savage A22 or the Ruger 10/22. The only rifle made in the USA is the Ruger and also the only rifle (at the time) that had open sights. The Savage 64F came in (on sale) for half the price of the Ruger and was the only other rifle with a steel receiver. I'm approaching this rifle by running the cheapest ammunition I can find because that's what is available.

I have learned that the action screws will need to be retorqued frequently on the plastic stock. So keep checking that tension otherwise you'll be losing time and money. The trigger is great but the reset is long. The barrel indexing might be off because I've had to drift the front sight well to one side. I've engaged the safety accidently while racking a round, the mag removal requires two hands and a few other noticeable things. Close examination of the bad magazine is that a tiny chip has broken out at the tip of the feeding ramp. The thin aluminum tip is gone but I don't know if this is the root cause of this mag's feeding problem. I'll eventually find the problem.

The 36gr FED 22LR ammo is running at about 1280 FPS and that sounds about normal to me.
