Changes to EI caregiving benefits

We are improving Employment Insurance benefits, making it easier for more Canadians to balance work and family responsibilities.

Canadians told us they want more flexible and inclusive options to support loved ones when they need it most.

Benefits for the care of a critically ill child have been expanded to include a wider support network. Now, extended family is also eligible for the family caregiver benefit for children, not only parents.

Also, when a critically ill or injured adult family member needs support, up to 15 weeks of benefits are now available to caregivers under the new family caregiver benefit for adults.

We’ve also made it easier to get a signed medical certificate. Both medical doctors and nurse practitioners can now sign.

These family caregiver benefits can be combined with compassionate care benefits already available to Canadians caring for family members at the end of life.

Benefits can be shared between eligible family members as long as each person applies.

So talk about it with your family.
