Charlemagne and the Consolidation of Rome: The war against the rebels.

Follow
German Empire

The Battle of Rome in 800 began when Charlemagne received a call for help from Pope Leo III, and was opposed by a group of Roman nobles. Charlemagne gathered a large and elite army, including cavalry and infantry, from across the Carolingian empire, towards Rome. Along the way, the Franks encountered strong resistance from the rebels, with many ambushes in the suburbs. Despite many difficulties, Charlemagne and his army continued to advance. Once they reached Rome, they launched a full siege, attacking the fortified city walls. Charlemagne personally led the final attack, breaking the line and defeating the rebels. After his victory, Charlemagne consolidated his control in Rome by appointing Frankish officials, establishing new laws and ensuring security, making Rome an important part of the Carolingian empire.   • Charlemagne and the Consolidation of ...
