Charlemagne from Latin Carolus Magnus, or Charles "the Great" (in German Karl der Große), was born approximately around 742748 and died January 28, 814 in AixlaChapelle. He was the most eminent of the Frankish dynasty to which he gave his name although he was not its founder: the Carolingian.
