Château Rouge, or African District (Quartier Africain), is a metro stop in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. It's vibrant with African vendors, restaurateurs and tradesmen. This thriving district pulses with sensory delights from spices plumbed from different African countries.
Located at the foot of the Montmartre hill, the popular district of Château Rouge is one of the meeting places of the African community. It welcomed a growing population of immigrants from West Africa in the 1980s. A multitude of small specialised shops are gradually developing around the central axis of the Dejean market, which gives Château Rouge its image of "petite Afrique" in the heart of Paris: exotic grocery stores, beauty and cosmetics stores, fabric shops, hallal butcher shops, taxiphones, restaurants etc.
