360Portugal - Portugal seen by a portuguese

A visit to Chaves, to its historical center, with new images of the Roman Bridge, the City Park, Museum of Contemporary Art, Church of Santa Maria Maior, and its Torre de Menagem. We visited the Fort of S.Francisco and its church of the old Franciscan Convent. We flew over the S.Neutel Fort, and we jumped to Vidago Golf Course and Monforte Castle, both in the vicinity of Chaves. We made a journey along the banks of the river Tâmega and its park, with a modern pedestrian bridge. Chaves is a city full of history, monuments and legends that feed it.
At the time of the Roman invasion of the Iberian peninsula, the Romans settled in the valley of the river Tâmega, where today the city rises and built fortifications by the periphery, taking advantage of some of the existing castros. Flavio Vespasiano, in AD 78, named it Aqua Flaviae, when the army arrived, attracted by the gold deposits of the Serra da Padrela. It was a barracks of legions and served as a privileged place for the resting of the warriors.
For the defense of the population, walls were erected and, for the crossing of the river, they built the bridge of Trajan. They encouraged the use of warm mineralmedicinal waters, installing thermal spas, exploring ores, especially golds and other natural resources. It is believed that the bridge of Trajan was built with the help of legionaries of the Seventh Legion (Legio VII Gemina Felix).
