Metals and nonmetals are used widely in everyday life. Metals are lustrous whereas nonmetals have no lustre. Some metals react with water to produce metal hydroxides and hydrogen gas. Generally, nonmetals do not react with water but some nonmetals are reactive when exposed to air. Such nonmetals are stored in water. For example, phosphorus is a very reactive nonmetal. It catches fire if exposed to air. To prevent the contact of phosphorus with atmospheric oxygen, it is stored in water.
