😬 Chewing Muscle Anatomy

One of the main muscles which you use for chewing and the socalled process of mastication is the Masseter muscle. This is a relatively small muscle, located on the side of your jaw, which connects your zygomatic arch to the angle and ramus of the mandible.

Besides bringing your mandible up towards the zygomatic, which is the process of elevation, the masseter may also assist in the protraction of the jaw. Which is basically when your lower set of teeth go beyond the upper layer.

This muscle is really important because I have found that in a lot of my clients who struggle with headaches, toothache, TMJ disorder, etc… this muscle has had a pivotal role in me releasing the tension and essentially fixing the problem.

What is interesting is that most of us tend to prefer one side of the jaw for chewing to the other. And if you think about it, this is just like any other imbalance in the body if you tend to use one side over another, the body will eventually compensate.

What is another interesting fact, is that the nerve which supplies this muscle is the trigeminal nerve, which again is a nerve that a lot of people struggle with, due to its position and it also is one of the cranial nerves.

I hope this video gives you a bit more insight into the function and anatomy of the masseter muscle. I will be also posting a video talking about how to release tension from the tissue, which will help with the symptoms I have described above.
