What is Chlamydia? Chlamydia is an STI caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It’s one of the most common STIs worldwide, particularly among young adults. Despite its prevalence, many people with Chlamydia don’t even realize they have it because it often doesn’t cause noticeable symptoms. This lack of symptoms can lead to undiagnosed and untreated infections, which can result in serious health complications over time.
Chlamydia trachomatis specifically targets the mucous membranes of the body, including the genital tract, rectum, and the eyes. Yes, it can even infect your eyes, though this is less common. Infections of the eyes occur primarily through direct or indirect contact with infected genital secretions. In women, the bacteria typically infect the cervix and can spread to the upper reproductive tract, potentially causing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). In men, Chlamydia commonly infects the urethra and can spread to the epididymis, which is a tube located at the back of the testicles that stores and carries sperm.
