A choking horse is no joke. On October 14th 2019, I knew the way Miss Kitty was coughing wasn’t good. Luckily choking horses don’t need the Heimlich maneuver, but bigger problems can arise quickly. Unlike humans, when a horse chokes it is still be able to breath because the obstruction is in the esophagus, not the windpipe. As you can see in this video, when the horse tries to swallow food or water, it will come back out the nostrils until the blockage is cleared.

After a horse has choked, there's a good chance that they may be prone to doing it again. A couple of ways to help prevent choke is to feed horses with a slow feed hay net, put large rocks in with grain to slow down consumption, or to add water to pelleted feed to prevent expansion of the pellets while the horse is swallowing.

Luckily in this video, Miss Kitty was able to clear the obstruction on her own after I massaged her throat. If the obstruction had not been cleared, a vet would have needed to manually clear it by running a tube through her nostril. Miss Kitty will receive her grain in the form of a mash for a few days just in case there is any discomfort due to inflammation.
